I’ve never done a tag on my blog before but these are always a fun way to share recommendations and experiences. Also, I haven’t posted on my blog since the beginning of the year so I thought this would be a fun way to ease back into it. Here are my answers to the travel tag:
1. Where in the world are you from?
I was born and raised in Durban, South Africa. All the way at the bottom right of Africa.
2. Have you ever been overseas? When / Where
When I was 18 I took my first overseas flight to the USA and lived here for almost 2 years. Since then I have been back and forth, stopping in the UK and the Middle East. I now live in the USA permanently.
3. Do you prefer summer or winter? Why?
There is no clear cut answer here for me as it definitely depends on where I am in the world. I love summer anywhere because there is always so much to do but I also love Winter. In South Africa it is very pleasant and you can even find days warm enough to spend on the beach! I am not a huge fan of Winter in the USA as here in Pennsylvania it snows – which is beautiful to see, fun to ski in and a pain in the rear to live in. But, ice hockey season is cool.
4. Summer or winter fashion?
Definitely winter. Give me all the layers, sweaters and knee high boots!
5. Where is somewhere you would love to travel to?
Can I list all the countries I haven’t yet been to? I also want to travel the rest of the US states. 20 down, 30 to go.
6. Name your essential make up items for the beach.
Sunscreen, duh! (Or at least a BB cream if you want some coverage).
7. Are you currently saving for a trip?
Yes! Adam (my husband) and I are going to Europe next year for a belated honeymoon and we are meeting my parents there too.
8. Do you like/dislike traveling?
Neither. I LOVE traveling.
9. Name a place in the world where you would love to shop.
Either London or Dubai. But, luckily shopping in the USA is really pretty great.
10. What is your favourite accent in the world to hear?
Probably Dutch (from Holland, not Pennsylvania). My grandparents were from Holland and hearing the accent makes my heart skip a beat when I’m reminded of them.
11. How many countries have you visited?
I have been to 12 countries.
12. Why do you travel?
There are honestly so many reasons why I travel. I like to get away from normal routines, meet new people, experience different cultures, try different foods and see it all for myself. Pictures in a book or on the internet just don’t do it for me. Travel has been my biggest teacher and I love it when someone talks about a place and I can relate to their experience or add to a conversation because I have been there myself.
13. Favourite city / country?
These questions where I am limited to one answer are so difficult. I have many favourites but the cities that stand out are Las Vegas (hugely underrated surprisingly enough), Chicago (where Adam and I got engaged) and Cape Town (so cliché but there really is just something about the place that makes you want to go back a million times).
My favourite country, apart from my beloved South Africa, is definitely Namibia. We spent 2 weeks there in 2010 and it has had my heart ever since. The landscapes are breathtaking and so diverse. In the space of just a few days you can see the beach, dessert, sand dunes, lunar landscapes, rock formations, the second largest canyon in the world and so much more.
14. Most memorable experience?
Speaking of canyons, watching the sunrise over the Grand Canyon is way up there with the best moments of my entire life. Also, a helicopter flip over the Grand Canyon is an absolute must for anyone who visits the Grand Canyon. It isn’t possible to fully grasp the vastness of the Canyon from the rim.
15. Best item purchased?
Shot glasses. I have a shot glass from almost every city I have visited since I was 18. I’m hoping to have a wall full by the time I die.
16. Advice for those that want to travel but can’t?
You can if you prioritise. There are many people who have enough disposable income to travel whenever they want, I am not one of those. It has taken many sacrifices and saying no to things I really want to buy or do in order to save for my travels. When I am working (which I am currently unable to do) I put away majority of my salary (after expenses) into savings straight away, to ensure it doesn’t get wasted on random things throughout the month.
We are able to travel Europe next year because we chose that trip over having a big wedding. Travel is not for everyone but if it is what you really want to do then it will take sacrifice.
17. Preferred method of travel: planes, trains or cars?
It all depends on who I’m with and where I’m going. I love flying alone, trains are a really comfy way to get around the USA and road trips are the bomb with people you love.
18. Top 3 travel items?
A phone with a good camera and google maps. A shoal to wear around my shoulders in conservative countries and to double up as a blanket in cold planes or airports. Wet wipes of all sorts – for removing make up, cleaning my face and hands and freshening up on long layovers.
19. Hostel or hotel?
Hostels as a single 18-20 year old were so much fun but as a married couple traveling we definitely prefer a nice hotel.
20. Are you a repeat visitor or do you like to explore new places?
I have been back and forth between the USA and South Africa because of my relationship but by choice I prefer to explore new places. I try to go to new places every time I travel because I’m very much a I-have-to-see-everything-at-least-once kind of person.
21. Can you recite your passport number from memory?
Yes. Not because of all the travels but rather because of all the visa paperwork in which I have had to write my passport number about 3 million times.
22. Do you read up on your destination for culture history or safety or do you just wing it?
I like to learn as I go. While I definitely have a good idea about the safety and nature of the place I am traveling to, I don’t like to learn too much about the culture or history beforehand. The lessons are so much richer when you’re in the place you’re learning about.
23. Where would you recommend a friend to visit and why?
South Africa because there really is just nothing like it and you can never understand the magic of it until you have experienced it for yourself.
24. You’re leaving tomorrow and money is no option, where are you going?
Thailand. It has been my dream to go there since I was sixteen and it is still going to be a while before I get there. If money was no option that would be my first pick.
25. Favourite landmark you’ve visited?
Is Disney World a landmark? Because then that’s definitely it. Main Street USA with Cinderella’s castle is something I wish everyone could experience before they die.
26. Beach or explore vacation?
Either or. I don’t care where I am as long as I’m traveling somewhere new and exciting.
If you managed to get all the way until the end, thank you for reading! I tag anyone who wants to do this tag – make sure to mention me so I can read yours too!
Stay awesome x
