THE MOST DEPRESSING DAY OF 2017

January 16th, 2017 has been dubbed “Blue Monday”, the most depressing day of the year. Reason being it is usually on this day that people have given up on their New Years Resolutions and apparently fallen into a sort of ‘depression’ (which I think is a very strong word to use in this case, but hey, I didn’t come up with the phrase).

This year I didn’t make any resolutions because that word alone makes my skin crawl. There’s something about the looming disappointment, when I eventually give up on the resolutions or fail to stick to them completely, that makes me feel uncomfortable thinking about them. I have however set myself personal goals which are measurable and I believe I will be able to achieve by the end of the year; fingers crossed.

With that being said, I might be alone on this one, but today was such a fresh start for me and I feel like I am only now getting into the full swing of 2017. No blue Monday for me; I woke up earlier than usual, hit the gym, caught up on plenty of admin ‘stuff’ that needed to be done and am getting back into the groove of my usual routine when not on vacation.

Just because some internet person decided today was a “Blue Monday” and because the weather in Durban depicts that quite well, doesn’t mean we all need to adopt that attitude too. When you think about the words “blue” and “Monday” on their own they actually depict light, sunshine and a new beginning. Don’t agree? Have a look at these definitions:

blue (adj): a colour intermediate between green and violet, as of the sky or sea on a sunny day.

Monday (noun): the day of the week before Tuesday and following Sunday “day of the moon”.

moon (noun): the natural satellite of the earth, visible (chiefly at night) by reflected light from the sun.
The words on their own mean something completely different than if they are put together. Maybe we should be more like that as people. We should make decisions for ourselves about how our Monday will go instead of letting other people decide for us.
Make your Monday one full of light, sunshine and new beginnings rather than allowing it to be the most depressing day of YOUR 2017.

  1. after noticing your south africa tag, i had to look at your about page. my niece goes to south africa this spring, and my daughter to new zealand very, very soon. she has been with her boyfriend 2 1/2 years, so also plans to keep her long-distance relationship going (as did you?).

    1. Awesome! Where in South Africa is she going? She should drop me a message on my Facebook page (It’s Carla Bubs) if she needs any tips/recommendations! I have a bit of experience showing foreigners around 🙂
I will have a look at your daughter’s blog, thank you for the link!

  2. I had no idea blue Monday was a thing that is really interesting. Also I hate making specific resolutions it feels like I’m just setting myself up for disappointment. I like a more general try and make the most of each day type of resolution.
